Retaliation is common on O'ahu. The city retaliated against residents and employees of a controversial "safe house" for victims of domestic violence after they spoke to government investigators looking into public corruption, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
“We have serious concerns about retaliation because we understand that residents were recently terminated following their collaboration with state and federal investigations,” Mateo Caballero, ACLU’s legal director in Hawaii, wrote in the June 26 letter to Dwight Nadamoto, the acting prosecutor, and two other city officials.
Throughout this account, Scott Goold consistently criticizes HEI President and CEO, HECO Chairman of the Board Connie Lau. Scott's supervisor, Lori Yafuso, gave Scott only one policy document: HEI Code of Conduct, which was signed by CEO Lau. HECO fired Scott for failing to follow their Substance Abuse Policy (SAP). The Asian women did not provide this policy document to Scott, as required.
The Asian women withheld the SAP from Scott for some two years — because the SAP states all employees must be made aware of the policy. Had Scott known this as an employee, he would not have been confused about HECO's medical cannabis policy. Scott would not have been fired. Scott would not have been humiliated, shamed and tortured by these cruel and incompetent women.
Had Scott known of the SAP requirement post-termination, he would have been able to immediately secure legal representation. The Asian women deliberately withheld the SAP from Scott to frustrate his ability to obtain justice. They were required to provide the SAP to Scott, as he requested their written policy on numerous occasions.

Young Brotheres: Job Application and Possible Interview
thao.tran@hawaiianelectric.com
shana.buco@hawaiianelectric.com
Aloha Ms. Tran,
Applied at Young Brothers. Listed you as contact: 808.543.4644
Told them HEI CEO Connie Lau fired me. It was her policy. Can’t hide this from people. I don’t lie. Connie's policy suggested I could use medical cannabis — any legal and prescribed drugs. Ms. Dear told me I would be fine. I'm a person who follows ALL the rules. Had you simply extended me ONE TINY courtesy — just to notify me — I would still be working at HECO.
I loved my job. I will always hate you for doing this to me and my family. Do you understand me? I loved my job. Cry each day. All the great IT people were my friends. I adored working for Lori Yafuso. She was the best manager in my life. Loved and respected my team. Miss them every day. I fit there. It’s hard for IT GEEKS to fit. We’re not “cool” like you, Connie and Shana. We’re always misfits in life. You stole that happiness from me.
All YOU had to do was write your policy clearly. You and Connie are simply too insecure and arrogant to admit your little mistake. You know you didn’t write your policy in a reasonable fashion. Had I known, I would have changed. When you asked April 12th, I worked out two times a day to rid myself of the THC-COOH.
Doctor said it would take 6-9 months. I did it in 33 days. Almost killed me. I was dizzy, nauseated and sick — had to eat ALL and ONLY protein to do this. That was 8 eggs per day, two slices of pineapple and two bananas. Lots of water. I dropped 20 lbs of fat in three weeks. That’s all I could take at that intensity. Passed your test 10 days later. PASSED YOUR TEST !!!
I’m a remarkable guy. KITV said Connie is remarkable. Not to me. Remarkable people are kind. They are compassionate. You all had to destroy me.
Believe you all treated me horribly. That’s on you. I’m a good guy. Do what is asked of me. Your policy is broken and you hurt our family, my manager and our work team. Remember that. I will never forget YOUR lack of hospitality and aloha!
Young Brothers asked me:
Can you tell me a time you had to learn a new system quickly with limited direction?
Each day I am asked to learn some new system with limited direction. World is a mystery. Nobody knows everything. In my work, I'm asked to find solutions to challenges. If they had been solved, people wouldn't ask or need me. I am curious, a scientist, a person who comes up with solutions. I'm extremely logical. Kind of a Mr. Spock type person. I rarely need direction. Usually work by myself — but ALL solutions come from teams. Meet well with others. I learn who is best at what task. Build teams with others. Generally, all of us work independently -- but connect when we need expertise from someone.
Like to solve puzzles and find solutions. Generally one of the first to arrive at work. Plan on finishing my day on time. Like routine. If there is chaos, I will work to bring order to the system. All humans do better in calm, organized environments. Take instruction well. Learn quickly. Usually only need to tell me once and will ask if I am uncertain. I believe "better right than fast." I am thorough. I check my work. I will make mistakes — rarely — but am human. I create systems for myself to help me ensure my work is flawless and perfect. My HECO manager, Lori Yafuso, and team members at Hawaiian Electric respected me.
FULL DISCLOSURE: Started at HECO as contractor Aug 13, 2018; HECO renewed contract for six months Dec 2018. Internal position opened. Manager requested I apply in Jan. I did. HECO offered me job Feb 11, 2019. Passed background check. I have injury. Walk with bad limp. I'm legal and prescribed medical cannabis patient. Have been for years. Feb 14, 2019, spoke with HR about my disability and medication. She told me I would be fine. Took pre-employment drug screen. Fired me Feb 25, 2019. Total chaos!!! HECO said I would be fine. Devastated me, my family, and my work team.
No longer on medical cannabis. Can pass any drug screen. Do not understand Hawai'i culture and laws on this subject. Claim we are legal. We aren't. I would be employed had I used an opioid prescription medication. I take NO pain medication at all now. World is simply too confused. Can't use a medication that is safe. Can use one that is dangerous. I just live with pain. I'm IT. I don't move much. I'm 6'5, fit, healthy. I do limited exercise most days. Just can't walk well. Former pro athlete. Hips, knees and feet busted up.
Like to work. Don't want hassles. World is crazy, especially related to pain medication. Athletes play in pain. We learn to deal with pain. I deal with pain and do a good job. Don't talk about it. Don't miss work. Extremely healthy individual.
Really upset me to lose my job. We all had worked hard to build our team. Very upset with HEI CEO Connie Lau. She's supposed to be a leader here. Leaders don't behave this way. Time to move on — didn't want you to find out secondhand. I'm an ethical, honest guy.
IT people are generally considered non-safety sensitive employees. Been drug tested at other companies. Due to legal use, nobody cared. Had used only at night before bed. Never before or during work. Never intoxicated or impaired. Do not use alcohol or tobacco. HEI first company to ever treat me this way. Shocking and devastating experience!
Talented guy if you're interested. HECO wanted me. HEI CEO Constance Hee Lau is extremely confused person. Unfortunate she would do this to me, our family and my HECO team. We all had worked very hard.
Thank you. Look forward to talking with you if you are interested.
NEVER HEARD back from Young Brothers

Re: Request for Employment Verification
Aloha e Scott. I received word that you reached out to the manager of the department you worked in as contractor requesting that you list her as your supervisor and a reason for your departure. You may want to inform HDS that HECO requests that any verification of employment be made to the Human Resources department. For contractors, HR simply verifies employment and that the person was a contractor (in this case an independent contractor of EdgeRock). HECO does not provide personal references.
If you have other questions like this, please let me know.

Recommendation Request
TO: lori.yafuso@hawaiianelectric.com
Aloha Lori,
With great sadness, I write to make a request. I have moved to a final interview with a UH position, School of Nursing. It would be an honor of course to join their fine program. They are a stellar group. Good people. The job pays $74K and is a less demanding position, Data Manager. I am thankful for the opportunity and will work hard for them.
My new managers will not be you though. This is not my team and will be somewhat alone and isolated there. I enjoyed fitting on your team. I savored our group marriage. You teased me about my metaphors of sports. Teams are extremely important to me. Tearing me from yours remains a death in my ‘Ohana. I grieve every day.
I am sorry for all the pain and confusion I have caused you and our team. I remain devastated still today. You are the best manager I have ever had — and I’ve been blessed with phenomenal managers. I’ve never had such a competent team, or people with whom I wanted to serve so intensely, as the group you put together.
I have tried everything possible — and will continue working to be returned. I don’t understand this behavior — what I can only interpret as hatred toward me by CEO Lau and senior HEI management. My crime was not that severe. I was willing to submit and obey any and every rule and policy. Had I known … had I only known.
Kaua’i seems to be more understanding. New Mexico is far more tolerant. I would have thought Honolulu to be the more advanced. As a policy professional, I remained stunned at the lack of attention HEI put into this matter. That CEO Lau would destroy my life and career — shatter our skilled team — over this matter continues to tear at my heart. How can anyone be so cruel?
Yet I need to work if possible. Are you willing to provide a recommendation for me?
Hope you’re off to a great week. I miss all of you so very much!
Thank you!

Aloha e Mr. Ernst,
This position came across my LinkedIn account yesterday. Assuming there isn’t an IT spot at this time, I would fit well in this role. Is the company interested in putting this behind all of us? There is no question I have much to offer. The issue was policy confusion.

RE: Want to consider a deal?
Scott,
Again sorry for the delay. After speaking to my client, they are not willing to consider this for a settlement.
Additionally, they are aware of an incident where you came back to a jobsite and entered a restricted area. Please understand that HECO is prohibiting you from doing that. See attached letter to that effect.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Joe
NOTE: About my birthday, I was doing business in the area of HECO. Thought I would visit my former supervisor, Lori Yafuso, to speak to her about a reference. I took the elevator to the 12th floor. Another HECO employee was in the elevator. We exchanged greetings. Told him I was on my way to visit Lori.
When we exited the elevator, I headed toward the intercom to request entry. The employee opened the door and invited me to enter. Followed him and went directly to Lori's workstation. She was not there. I spoke with three other HECO staff with whom I had worked. When Emily asked me to leave, I immediately departed. HECO blamed me wrongly again. Their employee invited me in.
