Thao Tran and Shana Buco
Aloha e Ms. Tran and Ms. Buco,
A year ago, while suffering great pain and disability, I followed my medical team's recommendation regarding an advanced pain relief formula. I’m well-versed in the dangers of various analgesics, thus agreed with their professional opinion.
When I accepted a contract position with HECO's IT department August 2018, I checked the HEI Code of Conduct. My medication appeared to be permissible. In the over six months while I worked for the company, management never suggested or informed me my medication might cause a problem.
In January 2019, HECO offered me a permanent, internal position. In the hiring process, management never informed me the medication might be an issue. When I had an opportunity to speak directly to HR about my situation, HR rep Liz Dear thanked me for informing her proactively and assured me I would “be fine.”
On February 20, 2019, IT Security contacted HR on my behalf and informed me the official start date for me would be February 25th. Mr. Lau congratulated me. Delighted, I informed my manager, coworkers, friends and family!!! I was proud of my accomplishment. My friends and professional colleagues joyously congratulated me.
However, on February 25th, unexpectedly, HR director Shana Buco instead fired me. She claimed I was a danger to the company and my coworkers. She stated I was engaged in illegal activity. And she added I was impaired / intoxicated at work. I was never engaged in illegal activity. Had never been intoxicated or impaired at work.
Ms. Buco instructed me to immediately collect my possessions and exit the building. For over six months, I had been solving challenging puzzles; engaged in complex tasks; building teams and new networks. Loved my work.
After a successful career, I had found the BEST manager of my life. Lori Yafuso is an incredibly talented and exceptional leader. We fit perfectly together. Had joined the MOST PROFESSIONAL team in my career. I respected them. They respected me in return. We were making awesome strides to move HECO and HEI into the next era of IT proficiency.
Yet Hawaiian Electric fired me! Forced me into isolation, sitting alone in a tiny room, watching the world go to work each day while I was denied employment. For the first month, I got up regular time, took bus to HECO, and then came back. Cried all the way. Was too embarrassed to tell anyone I had been fired.
As a man, have only our small family and my work. My wife and I are dedicated professionals. Do not have children. Work is our life. We’re both highly successful. She goes off each day to make a contribution. I am tortured and punished unable to work!
Hawaiian Electric labeled me a dangerous drug criminal — a drug thug! They denied me an opportunity to reapply — although HECO posted the position openly for the world. Anyone could apply — except me! Anybody could work for HECO — except me!
TORTURE and PUNISHMENT!!! HECO needed me — my team needed me — and I needed to work and participate with them. HECO tells employees we are family, that we are ‘Ohana. Bernie Sanders continues to gain momentum. Looks like he might be the Democratic challenger to the current president. Without question, the occupant in the White House is a divisive personality. Part of Bernie’s appeal is his compassion.
Bernie wrote on social media yesterday, "We become more human when my family cares about your family and your family cares about my family." I proved how I loved and cared about my Hawaiian Electric family. They reciprocated. We had a PERFECT fit — and that is extremely important in the islands.
Yet Hawaiian Electric executives DENY my application to return to work. Claim to be angry with me because I complained publicly about my termination. I'm not alone! There are some 30,000+ medical patients who suffer like me. We need a political solution.
The state of Hawai’i legalized our medication in 2000. They updated discrimination policies in 2015. Society realizes our medication offers great potential and demonstrates medical efficacy. HEI CEO Connie Lau controls this policy issue. Their retained attorney, Joseph A. Ernst, warned local businesses to update internal policies due to the rapid evolution of medical science. Hawaiian Electric failed to do this.
Now, they TORTURE and PUNISH me! Remain in my tiny box — looking at walls — stuck in the corner like the dunce in public school — because I received advanced education and medical training.
Hawaiian Electric punishes me for being progressive, for having new and modern ideas, and for trusting HEI Code of Conduct and company HR. I didn’t fail. Did what I was asked. Followed all the rules. Followed the law. Hawaiian Electric punishes and tortures me because I have exposed their shortcomings — not mine!
Once again, Hawaiian Electric needs to fill the Data Analyst position. I'm qualified. They have been searching now for over two years. I'm the one. I fit. Yet CEO Connie Lau and other executives prefer to punish and torture me — because I have exposed this hypocrisy; because I have begged political officials to hear my concerns and change the outdated law.
Clearly, Hawaiian Electric execs are not concerned about MY family. They do not see me as a human being. Considered me a low-life “drug criminal” and have treated me like Pond Scum. Hired an attorney to seek resolution. Susan Li and Thao Tran LIED during the negotiation process! How malicious is management? Why is Hawaiian Electric torturing and punishing me? I followed the law and internal policy.
This is YOUR energy company. They have a personnel gap in IT security. Need a specialized professional. I’m qualified, trained and fit perfectly. My manager and team respects me. Put me to work!
Hawaiian Electric execs deny me — and they put your service at risk. Local residents face the highest costs in the nation. Yet here I am — able and willing to work.
Hawaiian Electric execs refuse to hire me and protect you — because my case has embarrassed them. They care about their personal egos, not your family. You pay the highest costs in the nation. CEO Connie Lau received some $5.8 MILLION in 2018. If you make $50,000 per year, you must work 100 years to earn what she makes in one. And you have the highest costs in the nation. HECO needs me. CEO Lau won’t allow me to work for you.
CEO Lau instead prefers to punish and torture me. She wastes my talent. Sit in my apartment. She shuts down my brain. She doesn’t allow me to use my skills. She denies HECO and residents of Hawai’i a professional they need.
Hawaiian Electric is considered the most prestigious company in the islands. Is this respectful action? CEO Lau is viewed as one of the remarkable people here. Is this remarkable behavior?
Hawaiian Electric management tortures and punish me, while they currently ask to raise your costs! This is not aloha. It's not professional behavior. This is definitely not a pono example for Hawai'i.
CEO Connie Lau, please ... please stop torturing me. Haven’t I suffered enough pain? Haven’t the good and decent people of Hawai’i endured enough frustration, high costs and inefficient service?
Can’t we all work together following the Hawaiian way? Please allow ho’oponopono to go forward, as I have requested. We can modernize local policies. We can make a better world for all our families.
Thank you in advance and mahalo nui loa,
Scott
Scott simply seeks to understand what enormous pain the Asian women of Hawaiian Electric hold inside that they would destroy his career and reputation knowing all these facts. Scott Goold wishes the Asian ladies of Hawaiian Electric healing. You all truly need to heal.
Scott Goold admired CEO Connie Lau. Considered the opportunity to serve Hawaiian Electric an honor. Extended full professional courtesy to all the management personnel. Why was he not treated similarly in return?
These ladies, generally kind Asian women, stripped the position from White male Scott Goold — citing policy violation. They violated policy failing to inform Scott of their policy; they violated policy assuring Scott he would be fine.
Can't have a conversation? Most employers would discuss their poicy with the employee before making a final determination. They didn't give Scott basic due process.
Scott is a professional employee. Shana Buco claimed he had failed their test; demanded Scott immediately surrender his company badge; collect his personal belongings and exit. Drop all work. Abandon projects with no handoff. Crushed his IT team.
A year later, position still open, IT department desperate for help, the generally kind Asian women continued to deny Scott employment with Hawaiian Electric.
Bernie wrote on social media yesterday, "We become more human when my family cares about your family and your family cares about my family."
Scott proved how he loved and cared about the Hawaiian Electric family. They reciprocated. The IT team had a PERFECT fit — which is extremely important in the islands.
HECO posted a Data Analyst position again on February 21, 2020. Job number is 4196. The HR group would not let Scott Goold apply.
Hawaiian Electric blocked Scott from applying for the job for which he qualified a year previously. Company claims Scott already applied. He didn't.
Job number for position for which Scott applied in 2019 is 3342 (download). On February 26, 2019, at 3:28 PM, Scott wrote to Shana Buco.
When we talked yesterday, I asked to speak with a company legal rep. You told me someone would call. Nobody has. I'm extremely confused. You never told me HECO didn't allow Medical Cannabis. Nobody informed me. Even when I notified Ms. Dear she didn't say anything. I was given the Code of Conduct when I first arrived. It doesn't suggest legal medical cannabis is prohibited. I love my job. I would do anything to keep it. Had you or someone told me, I could have switched to another pain med. I wasn't trying to violate company policy.
This is YOUR energy company. Asian females at HECO fired Scott. They had not provided their Substance Abuse Policy, as required. When Scott asked, he was told he would be fine. They knew he didn't know; they set him up to fail.
The Asian women allowed Scott to incriminate and humiliate himself; then they booted him from company premises in shame and disgrace.
HECO executives for over a year allowed the company to suffer a personnel gap in IT security. The department needed a specialized professional. Scott was qualified, trained and fit perfectly. His manager and team respected him. HECO executives refused to allow Scott to work!
Hawaiian Electric execs retaliated against Scott Goold — and they put services at risk. Local residents face the highest costs in the nation. Yet here Scott is — willing and able to work.
Hawaiian Electric execs refuse to hire Scott and protect your services — because Scott Goold filed a complaint with the Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission. They care about their personal egos, not your family.
